All-season tyres are becoming more and more popular. They're designed to replace both summer tyres and winter tyres and save you changing twice a year. But they're a compromise – and that doesn't suit everyone.
The advantages
- No seasonal change: you save change appointments and storing a second set.
- Flexible when the weather turns: a sudden cold snap in October or April won't catch you out.
- One set instead of two: lower purchase cost, no space needed in the basement or garage.
The disadvantages
- A compromise at the extremes: in heavy snow and ice a good winter tyre is superior, in summer heat a summer tyre.
- Faster wear: because they run all year, they often wear out sooner.
Who they're for
All-season tyres are a good fit if you
- mostly drive in town and the surrounding area,
- cover relatively few kilometres a year,
- live in a region with mild winters – like the Lower Rhine,
- can leave the car at home when heavy snow falls.
If you drive a lot, often travel to the mountains or drive a powerful vehicle, you're better off with summer and winter tyres.
Important: look for the Alpine symbol. Only then are all-season tyres permitted in wintry road conditions.
Our recommendation
There's no answer for everyone. Talk to us – we'll ask about the way you drive and recommend the tyre that really suits you.
