Storing tyres properly: how to keep them in shape

Lying flat, standing or hanging? Why light and heat are bad for tyres and what matters when storing them.

How to store tyres: four tyres in labelled bags stacked flat on a shelf

Six months off can harm tyres more than some journeys. Stored badly, the rubber ages faster and deformation can occur. A few rules keep your tyres in shape for longer.

With or without rims?

Tyres without rimsstanding upright, turned slightly every few weeksstacked flat, hung up

The ideal conditions

  • Cool: heat speeds up ageing. No heaters, no boiler room.
  • Dark: UV light makes rubber brittle. Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Dry: moisture harms tyres and rims.
  • Away from oil, solvents and electric motors: chemicals and ozone attack the rubber.

Before storing

  1. Clean the wheels and check them for damage.
  2. Mark the position (e.g. FL for front left) so you can rotate the wheels next time.
  3. For complete wheels, increase the tyre pressure slightly – it drops during storage.
No space, no time for heavy lifting? Our tyre hotel takes care of it: cool, dry and safe, with a fixed storage place for every set.
